Two Generations

Art isn't just for the kids!

Angela Derrick first became acquainted with Kennedy Heights Arts Center five years ago when her son enrolled in summer camp. Later, a "light bulb went off" when she realized that the Arts Center also offered programs for adults and she could participate too.

She took a drawing class, then painting, then photography - and that's where she found her love. The Arts Center has been an invaluable resource for her family.

"As basically a single mom, there is no way we could've afforded to participate without the sliding scale," said Angela. "There is no other place in Cincinnati that offers all that you do and makes it accessible to everyone."

The Arts Center is a welcoming, nurturing place for Angela and her 14 year old son Chandler to explore their creative sides and feel a part of a community.

They both have enjoyed being a part of our annual artist-in-residence program for the past four years. "Every year its something different," says Angela. "We get to try something new."

Chandler likes that he's been able to express himself through writing and art, and connect with other kids. "I like how the instructors creatively push us, without being too forceful," reflected Chandler.

Two generations, both finding their niche.
